Alan is our Resident Partner in Hong Kong; a practising solicitor in England, Scotland and Wales and a registered foreign lawyer with the Hong Kong Law Society. Alan specialises in real estate, immigration, international law, arbitration, and cross-border disputes, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Alan began his career as a chartered engineer, having been awarded a first class Bachelor’s degree and a PhD at the age of 24 from the University of Warwick. He was called to the bar in 1993, and subsequently became a solicitor.

Past legal project examples include major capital projects and the day-to-day commercial issues arising during his time as in-house counsel of a multi-national engineering company, where Alan also held the position of company secretary.

Alan’s subsequent role was with a London law firm, where he undertook a range of energy and engineering matters. From there Alan set up his own firm in Central London and later on, opened a branch office in Hong Kong.

Alan is a native Cantonese and Mandarin speaker, and has had  legal articles published in a variety of newspapers and magazines, in both Chinese and English.


Case Highlights:

  • Advised on merger and acquisition cases following the introduction of China’s ‘Go Out Policy’ encouraging foreign investments from mainland based enterprises. 
  • Advised on the acquisition of Cadac Electronics by Soundking Group, a Ningbo based audio manufacturer. , was reported in The Law Gazette.
  • Conducted many successful appeal cases for rejected visa applications. Recipient of certificate of excellence awarded by the United Nations affiliate in 2013.
  • Scottish practice.  Acted for a Chinese enterprise in purchasing a privately owned island on the west coast of Scotland.  The purchase included a luxury spa hotel and all facilities.
  • FPSO and offshore installations. Chartered engineer worked on offshore platforms. Worked as contract manager on Conoco Macculloch Oil field development, which was the first FPSO in the UK Continental Shelf.  Conducted dispute resolution and litigation on FPSOs and offshore installations.  Case: Staveley Industries Plc, Trading as EI.WHS v Odebrecht Oil & Gas Services Limited [2001] 2 WLUK 792, the first court’s decision on the applicability of the Housing Grants Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 in respect of onshore construction work for  EPIC offshore contracts.
  • Acted for Hong Kong companies in English cases: In Great Wealth Telecom Limited v Simtel Communications Limited [2007] EWHC 95 (Ch) successfully persuaded the judge to do a U-turn on his judgement resulting a favourable decision for the client. Also, appeared in court hearing in London using video link in Hong Kong.
