International trade and shipping lawyer specialising in commodity trading, carriage of goods and charterparty disputes.

Carl’s practice focuses on dispute resolution in the shipping and international trade sectors, where he advises clients on a broad spectrum of disputes arising in relation to sale and purchase contracts for various commodities, as well as disputes relating to charterparties and bills of lading.

In addition to litigation in the English Courts, Carl has been involved with numerous arbitrations and has experience of Alternative Dispute Resolution. 

International Trade

Carl advises on all aspects of commodity trading disputes, with a particular emphasis on oil and gas trading.  On the contentious side, Carl advises clients on a wide range of issues arising under sale and purchase contracts, including disputes relating to delivery obligations, quality claims, cargo shortages, payment obligations and documentary credits.  He also advises clients on the shipping aspects of their operations.
On the non-contentious side, Carl regularly advises clients on the terms of their sale and purchase contracts and also has experience of drafting and negotiating joint venture agreements for the sale and purchase of various commodities.


Carl acts for shipowners, charterers and P&I Clubs and his practice encompasses a broad range of issues arising under charterparties and bills of lading.  Carl is experienced in cases relating to the carriage of goods by sea and also advises freight forwarders in relation to multimodal transport issues.
